]]>RPB turns nine this month! The great thing about birthdays is that sometimes you look back and realize that the stuff you worried about and fixated on in the past isn't such a big deal anymore.
I clearly remember that a year ago, we were in the midst of a pandemic (still are) and knee deep into RPB's rebrand process that launched last October. My daily thoughts were overtaken with fear about what the future held and like many of you, I personally felt like so much of what was happening was out of my control.
After a long period of so much uncertainty and nine years into this RPB experiment, all of these things still ring true even more so today.
1. Less is more
Our simple skin care formulas are effective, easy to use, smell great and can be enjoyed by the whole family.*
2. Self care is truly 100 percent healthcare
As a society, we have gone through some pretty challenging times since the beginning of 2020. All these months later, we feel so confident in saying that taking care of ourselves is a huge priority for decreasing stress, increasing productivity and improving our overall mental health.

Today, I'm sharing some tips to keep our bodies happy this summer. Let's get started!
1. FOR THE BODY: ADD WATER –– Seems simple enough to add more water, but it's actually more complicated.
THE TAKE AWAY: Drinking water helps our bodies survive the heat whether it's brain function, digestion, muscle recovery and more - drink up!
2. FOR THE SKIN: ADD OIL (+ WATER) –– Adding moisture is heavily touted as the most important thing that we can do for our skin.
THE TAKE AWAY:
adding oil-based products immediately bathing/cleansing (or using water-based products) can help lessen TEWL especially during the hot summer.

Summer heat in Texas is here to stay for the next several months. When the temps go up, our skin starts craving a little extra attention especially after any outdoor activities in the sun.
A favorite way to nourish our bodies during the summer heat is to add more fresh fruit into our diet. Melons, mangos, and berries are a wonderful way to keep our bodies hydrated while outdoors in the sun, but they also add in a healthy dose of vitamins and antioxidants for glowing skin.
But what about food on our face, like a fresh fruit mask? I LOVE fresh fruit masks for so many reasons, but the recipe I am sharing today is a nourishing after-sun treat that is my favorite way to mask this summer – Enjoy!

This face mask is perfect to make and use after a day spent in the sun!
the scent is deliciously intoxicating
nourishes and hydrates post-sun skin
calms and soothes dry, parched skin
I chose cantaloupe for its hydrating benefits and scent, but any melon will work!
a handful of cantaloupe chunks
a handful quick-cooking oats
a big spoon of honey
puree all ingredients in a food processor until very smooth. This step is important as a chunky mixture will fall off your face. :)
apply a thin layer to your face (about a tablespoon) and leave on up to 10 minutes or more if you can stand it!
best enjoyed while resting on your back and letting the mask work its magic
rinse off with warm water, blot dry and follow up with your favorite oil or cream to seal in the moisture
use the leftover mask mixture in a smoothie or use to make overnight oats :)
Note: This mask should not be made in large quantities as it will spoil even when refrigerated after a couple of days. Make it fresh and use it up!

In early 2019, I took a trip to New York to brainstorm and collaborate with friends about all things RPB. I had been planning for some updates to the brand and the work done on that trip was the beginning of RPB’s transition to what it is today.
How's it going? I hope the crisp cooler air has found its way to your area and that warm soup is on the menu soon!
Today is also a day to share everything I love about November with you. It can be summed up in two words -- pumpkin everything.
First up is pumpkin empanadas! Have you had one?
As a kid, I remember every Halloween, we would carve our pumpkin (it was always a huge one), add a tea light and put it out on a table on our porch to wait for the trick-or-treaters. As soon as the last piece of candy was gone, my mom would scoop up the pumpkin and take it inside to begin the long process of cutting it up, putting the pieces in a stock pot to cook and eventually end up with a few cups of homemade pumpkin puree.
She would then cook it again adding in sugar and all the spices that are reminiscent of pumpkin pie -- cinnamon, clove, ginger and nutmeg. Once cooled, into the freezer it went for another day (usually right before Thanksgiving) to use it as a filling for her delicious empanadas.
Below, I'm sharing the fast way to make empanadas in the rare case you didn't cut up and cook your Halloween Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin!
Making empanadas in November is one of the special ways I keep mom's memory alive. I hope you enjoy this quicker version as we head into the busy holiday season.

Today I'm sharing some brief thoughts about all things recycling and a fun family activity to upcycle your empties.
But let's start at the end. Every day is Earth Day. :)
It's no secret that all topics related to Earth Day start to ramp up on social media leading up to April 22 every year and slowly fade into the background until the following year.
We've made some changes here at RPB. You can read about them here. And we will continue to improve how we do things as we learn, grow and listen to your feedback.
Part of that learning process involves asking lots of questions. In the past several months, here is some of what I've learned regarding all things recycling:
The topic of recycling is a sensitive one.
Recycling efforts vary greatly depending on where you live in the world.
Here in the US, recycling standards vary greatly by region, state and city.
Some cities no longer allow glass to be recycled curbside due to the high cost of recovering it during the sorting process.
All glass is recyclable but NOT all may be recycled due to freight costs and the color of the glass.
More education is needed at the local level to teach all of us how to best recycle our plastic, glass and paper.
Ouch. Basically, I've learned that recycling has a drastic ebb and flow depending on where you live. Also, it can get really complicated and messy if you start digging around to learn more.
But here's the great news!
There are two other buzz words that come up on Earth Day -- Reduce and Reuse.
Every year, I pick a fun activity to teach my son about the importance of doing our part to be kind to Mother Earth. The activity almost always involves reusing something to reduce the need to go buy something new.
This year we had fun reusing some empty RPB jars and bottles to make decorative little vases for flowers and holders for all things beauty.
This would make a great educational summer activity (using some of your RPB empties!) that kids can gift to their friends and loved ones.
What you'll need:
paper scraps
empty bottles/jars
decoupage glue
sponges to apply glue
There are tons of decoupage videos online, but we kept our activity very simple. We took our floral design, printed it on recycled paper and cut it to fit on our glass vessels. Check out one variation that we did and shared on Instagram.
Earth Day is a great day to shed light on how much more we can do to preserve and be kind to Mother Earth.

WHAT A YEAR –– 2017 will be remembered here at RPB as one full of gratitude, growing pains and joy.
Ok, so it wasn't all love and joy, but all in all, you made this year a great one for us and for that I am forever grateful!
As I look to the new year, I sense a feeling of hopefulness everwhere I look in my social circles. Today I'm sharing eight things that I'm looking forward to in 2018 and I hope you'll join me!

ONE: GET OUTSIDE
I have friends that tell me the cure for all things stress is to periodically change up our environment, more specifically, spend more time outdoors!
Many of us spend way too much time in front of a computer, at a desk, in an office or stirring a pot (of Bee Cream!). Here's to more time spent outdoors in 2018.

TWO: SEEK OUT LAUGHTER
A long time ago, I read that we are what we repeatedly do. This applies to so much in our lives, but I particularly love it when it comes to laughing. My son has a way of making me laugh more every single day. When we laugh more, more endorphins (the happiness hormones) are released and that is always a good thing!
THREE: GO SOMEWHERE WE'VE NEVER BEEN
This is an exciting one! Who's joining me in going somewhere you've never been in 2018? Whether is a small remote town in West Texas or a faraway land (Italy may have to wait!), I'm putting this task on this year's list. I love learning about new places, finding out how other people live and what gives them joy. I can't wait to see the places that you and I will visit in 2018!
FOUR: SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-CARE
I talk about this all the time and 2018 I will do more of it. Caregivers need reminders that they too need to be cared for, but often times, we must do it for ourselves. Life can sometimes be crazy 23 hours out of the 24 hour day.
Together, let's talk more about self-care as a necessity and not an option.
When we take better care of ourselves, we are better able to care for others. XO
FIVE: LISTEN MORE
Listening more is a biggie.
Many of the surprises that we launched this year at RPB were all because we listened to you! And though we can't create and offer everything you send us messages about, we were excited to offer new things this year that made many of you do a happy dance! #coconutbeachbodyoil #sweetpumpkineverything #handandbodywash :)
When we stop listening, we stop learning. We stop learning about ourselves and we stop learning about others and the world around us.
Here's to honoring who we are while still listening and learning from everyone around us.

SIX: EAT ALL THE THINGS (even if it's just a small bite!)
The word diet makes me run for the hills and we are already being bombarded with that word because a new year begins the conversation of resolutions, diets, etc.
In 2018, I want to eat all things. Not just the sweet things (I admit I have a weakness to them), but all things that a busy life sometimes makes us miss -- cooking more with simple ingredients, eating nutrient-dense food, and taking time to enjoy it.
And speaking of food, I believe that we all need and deserve a little sweetness in our lives. There are recipes online for everyone now (low sugar, gluten-free, vegan). Here are a couple of sweet favorites that I'm making for New Year's Eve.
Mini Chocolate Cheesecakes (these happen to be vegan, but you can find many quick no-bake options online) I made the ones in the photo above pretty quickly -- the hardest part is putting them in the freezer and waiting!
Candied Nuts (this year I'm drizzling a little dark chocolate over them!)
SEVEN: TELL PEOPLE THAT MATTER THAT THEY MATTER
This one can often be difficult to communicate if words don't seem sufficient.
Here's the good news!
Communication is more than words. I'm gonna bake that cake, leave a sweet note, add extra emojis to my text and cook that warm meal.

EIGHT: NOTICE EVERYTHING
For me noticing everything means putting down my phone, turning off the TV or shutting down my computer a little more every week.
When we spend more time face to face with friends and loved ones, we notice things we sometimes missed in the past.
I will tell Alexa (Amazon's digital assistant device) to remind me every evening to put away my phone.
I want to mix things up in 2018 both in RPB and in life.
